Born, 1974, Odemira, Portugal

Lives and works in Malmö, Sweden

He graduated in Art History at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, 1996, and in 2002–05 completed the Programa de Estudos Independentes, at Maumaus – Escola de Artes Visuais, Lisboa. His solo shows are: Time After Time (2008), KHM Gallery, Malmö, Sweden; As Time Goes By (2006), Galeria 111, Lisbon; João Leonardo (2006), ArteContempo, Lisbon. Amongst his group shows we can call attention to: It´s Not Easy (2008), Exit Underground, New York; My Name is Red (2008), Gallery Image Furini Arte Contemporanea, Arezzo, Italy; E-Flux Video Rental (2008), Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon; Where are you from? (2008), Faulconer Gallery, Grinnell College, US-IA; Stream (2007), White Box, New York; Cross Borders (2007), Palladium, Malmö, Sweden.

João Leonardo has been awarded the EDP – Young Artist, prize in 2005, which is one of the most prestigious awards for young portuguese artists. During 2007 and 2009 he is a guest artist at MA in Malmö University.
